Disney

Some of my favorite movies to watch are the Disney princess movies. Not only are they nostalgic, but they are also very entertaining. I have also loved that Disney has recreated some of the classical fairytales and made them into live action films. Here are some of my favorite movies that have been remade over the past few years and a little history about the original story.

CINDERELLA

Did you know that Disney did not invent Cinderella? In fact, the first Cinderella was Greek. Charles Perrault's late 17th-century tale Cendrillion (the little glass slipper) was the original story. It gave Disney the inspiration to create the classical Cinderella movie in 1950. However, both plots of these movies were very similar. It revolved around a young girl who became the family's maid or servant before she was rescued by a prince. This story has been around the world and there are several different versions of Cinderella in multiple countries.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

The original story is based off a 16th Century romance between a French court servant and a man with an incurable hair growth. This beloved fairytale is inspired by the 1740 story La Belle et la Bete written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. The author felt compelled to write the story after he heard about Petrus Gonsalvus, who suffered from hypertrichosis. This condition caused Gonsalvus to grown hair all over his body and face. His wife was unaware of his condition, until they met on their wedding day. However, she was unphased by it and the couple had four sons and three daughters. Here are some more fun facts about Beauty and the Beast.

ALADDIN

Aladdin is inspired by a century old story called The Thousand and One Nights or also known as The Arabian Nights. In the story, a woman, named Scherherazade, is married to a king who is known for killing his wives after being married to them for one day. In order to save her life, she creates multiple stories (one of them being Aladdin) for her husband and purposefully leaves out the ending, but promises him that she will finish it the next day. The suspense and curiosity of the stories intrigue the king, and therefore he continues to delay Scherherazada's death. See how Aladdin evolved over the years and became a beloved Disney favorite.
